In the latest move in college football’s summer shake-up, the Big Ten, Pac-12 and ACC formed an alliance in a bid to create a stronger counterweight to the Southeastern Conference
With the Southeastern Conference rapidly asserting its power in college football, three of the other major circuits—the Big Ten, Pac-12 and Atlantic Coast Conference—said on Tuesday they will form an alliance to assert their influence in the rapidly changing collegiate sports landscape.
It’s effectively a bid to create a stronger counterweight to the SEC, which will soon balloon to 16 teams. The new alliance involves 41 universities from across the country, and includes 13 teams ranked in the 2021 Associated Press preseason poll. The most concrete aspect of the link-up is a commitment by the conferences to to play each other more often in football and men’s and women’s basketball—which would shore up their standing with both fans and broadcasters in the face of the SEC’s swelling power.
