U.S. Figure Skating Championships: Ilia Malinin is expected to attempt a rare quad axel
SAN JOSE — Team USA is ushering in a new generation of figure skaters. That means the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships in San Jose have been filled with new faces to watch and new feats to behold.
“It’s a very big leap from last year,” Malinin said after his short program. “Last year I feel like nobody really knew me until after nationals. It was almost like this random guy showed up and that he came out here and he surprised everyone. Now that I’m a big name out there I really hope I can keep it like that and I’ll try anything to make sure that it stays that way.”
Malinin, who dubbed himself the “Quad God,” landed the first-ever quad axel in competition in skating history last year at both the U.S. Classic in Lake Placid and again in the higher-level Grand Prix. The Fairfax, Va. native pumps plenty of quad jumps throughout his routines – including a quad toe loop and quad Salchow. But skaters rarely even attempt a quad axel.
