In their quest to take back the Senate majority, Republicans can’t afford to give away seats. But Missouri’s GOP primary is shaping up to do exactly that.
Eric Greitens, the scandal-ridden former governor of the state, leads the GOP primary. A Trafalgar poll earlier this month had him leading the GOP field with 30.5% of the hypothetical vote, with state Attorney General Eric Schmitt at 23% and Rep. Vicky Hartzler just under 17%.
This is expected. A generic Republican should easily win a statewide election in Missouri, which sent Josh Hawley to the Senate over incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill in 2018 during a Democratic wave year. But Greitens is not a generic Republican, and the polling reflects that: He leads one of the top no-name Democratic candidates by 0.9 points and the other by 0.2, in both cases a statistical tie.
Missouri's Senate race should not be competitive, but sending Greitens to the general election would make it exactly that. Republicans already have to play defense in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, two states that backed President Joe Biden in 2020. Having to play defense in Missouri, in an overall national environment that favors the GOP so much, would be embarrassing. More importantly, it would make winning back the Senate majority even more difficult.
Democrats were already given a gift when former President Donald Trump tanked the GOP’s chances in the Georgia Senate runoffs in 2021. Republicans have to make up for that in 2022, but Greitens would hand Democrats another gift and make it more likely Republicans spend all of Biden’s first term in the minority in the upper chamber. The Senate has allowed Biden to move several objectionable nominees, and he is more likely to get two more years of that if Greitens wins the primary.
Missouri Republicans must unite behind another candidate to keep Greitens from the nomination. One man’s ego can’t be allowed to let Senate Democrats continue to push Biden’s damaging agenda. Greitens is a train wreck waiting to happen. Missouri Republicans must make sure he never gets on the tracks.
