Acting head coach Rodney Terry will lead No. 6 Texas into Big 12 play with Chris Beard...
AUSTIN — No. 6-ranked Texas opens Big 12 play Saturday against Oklahoma at the Lloyd Noble Center. For the Longhorns, it will mark Game 5 with associate head coach Rodney Terry serving as the team’s acting head coach.
On Dec. 23, Trew released her first public statement since Beard’s Dec. 12 arrest: “Chris did not strangle me, and I told that to law enforcement that evening. Chris has stated that he was acting in self-defense, and I do not refute that. I do not believe Chris was trying to intentionally harm me in any way. It was never my intent to have him arrested or prosecuted. We appreciate everyone’s support and prayers during this difficult time.
The university said it’s aware of Trew’s statement and declined further comment amid its own internal investigation. A team spokesman confirmed Terry, now 4-0 as acting head coach, will continue to lead the team during Beard’s suspension. The Longhorns remain a Final Four contender, Beard or no Beard. They’re one of 14 teams with no more than one loss and are 2-1 against teams ranked in the Associated Press top 25.
Wednesday, Carr torched Texas A&M-Commerce with 41 points in the Longhorns’ 97-72 win at the Moody Center. Afterward, he became the first Texas player to meet with the media since Beard was suspended.
