Astros notes: With an eye on WBC and Dominican Republic, Framber Valdez has solid outing

Framber Valdez has stayed in camp with the Astros rather than pitch in the WBC for the Dominican Republic.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Shortly after completing his third Grapefruit League start for the Astros on Monday, pitcher Framber Valdez dressed in the clubhouse and kept his eyes glued to a television screen, which showed his Dominican Republic countrymen — and two of his Astros teammates — beating Nicaragua in a World Baseball Classic game unfolding just 73 miles away in Miami.

“I'm here I'm just trying to prepare for the season,” he said through an interpreter. “The reason I didn't go was I just didn't feel ready to be there at the moment. And I just continue working to prepare for the very long season that we're going to have ahead of us. … Definitely supporting all our guys from this team that are playing for the Dominican Republic, and even guys from other teams that are playing for the Dominican Republic.

The second Nationals batter Valdez faced homered, the first home run he has given up this spring. The lefty did not allow another extra-base hit after that.
