KUANTAN: Wisma Putra is watching the situation in Bolivia closely following an escalation of violence between security forces and the supporters of exiled former president Evo Morales.

Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said they were monitoring the state of affairs in the South American nation but there was no need to issue a travel advisory for the time being.

Asked to comment on reports that a Malaysian tourist was stranded in Bolivia, Saifuddin said:"For any Malaysians stuck there, I'd advise them to contact our consular representatives. Normally we will try to help if he wants to leave but for now we have to make sure he is safe." It has been reported that dentist Muhammad Syameen Abd Raub, 28, was currently caught in the chaos after going on vacation in Bolivia's capital of La Paz on Nov 9.Morales fled to Mexico after being pressured to resign by the military and police amidst a controversial election.

In the wake of this, his supporters stepped up protests, culminating in clashes with security forces.
