Deputy foreign minister Mohamad Alamin says they could include those not registered with the authorities.
The foreign ministry says it has rescued 518 job scam victims and is tracing 186 others, although a report has put the number of Malaysians being held in neighbouring countries as close to 2,000.
“There are many news reports that mention figures that are as high as 2,000 victims. This could be that are yet to be registered with and yet to be officially tracked by us ,” he said. Mohamad was responding to supplementary questions from Oscar Ling and Sabri Azit about the number of job scam victims that have been saved.
