The 19-year-old East Palo Alto teen can be seen cruising around the South Bay, pulling off gravity-defying wheelies and eye-popping swerves at the drop of a hat. His skill and unwavering passion for cycling stands out to anyone who catches a glimpse — whether out in the streets or on social media, where he shares videos of his rides. And his confidence that he can pull off the tricks is equally matched by his determination to get back up whenever he makes a wrong move or takes a tough fall.
Live in Peace seeks to empower young people by connecting them to their talents, validating their strengths, and making them feel valued and seen. For a long time, his ambitions were bigger than his circumstances would allow. It was hard living in an apartment and trying to practice the kind of tricks he wanted to do, he said. Mountain bikes are also pretty costly, he said.
Maldonado brought his bike to the shop one day. He didn’t know it, but he was walking into a place that would soon become a home to him. “It doesn’t feel like a job, since I’m helping out people I know from the neighborhood — I like helping people a lot,” he said. “We have an extremely deep and real relationship with them,” Starnes-Logwood said. “Maybe we’re a second family — we’re aunties and uncles to some people, or maybe we’re more like parents to other people, but we operate like a family.”
