It’s shaping up to be a white Christmas, but also a windy and dangerously cold one, according to the National Weather Service.Meteorologists in the agency’s Chicago office have issued a winter storm watch, which will go into effect for northern Illinois at 6 p.m. Thursday and last though 6 a.m. Saturday, the morning of Christmas Eve.
Though potential snow totals remain up in the air, meteorologists said they have increasing confidence that an approaching arctic air mass will cause temperatures to plummet Thursday night into Friday morning. The deep freeze will be accompanied by high winds, with gusts topping 55 miles per hour, which will make things feel even colder: Wind chills could dip to 20 to 30 degrees below zero. Prepare for power outages, meteorologists said.
Blowing snow could reduce visibility to the point where the service would issue a blizzard warning. That would occur if visibility is a quarter-mile or less for an extended period. The strongest winds are expected Friday, continuing into Saturday. Winds won’t die down until Saturday night into Sunday, meteorologists said.With the storm system shaping up to be widespread across the Midwest, meteorologists said they wanted to get the word out as quickly as possible so people could adjust their holiday travel plans if needed.
