A chasm separates Democrats and Republicans when it comes to their views on climate change. The good news is that this distance is closing among the youngest...
But if you ask adults ages 18 to 29, the number who consider climate change a major concern is 64%, or nearly two-thirds. That’s a level of consensus that can force serious debate about solutions if these younger voters show up at the polls to make their presence known. Some of them are waving their hands. A few days ago, a young conservative college student from Washington, D.C., compelled candidates at the Republican primary debate to address climate change.
It’s ironic that the youngest candidate on stage, 38-year-old Vivek Ramaswamy, gave the most dismissive answer, referring to the climate change “agenda” as a “hoax.” That response did not impress the conservative audience at the debate in Wyoming, where the crowd booed so loudly that it drowned out Ramaswamy’s voice.
Even as we optimistically note the willingness of young adults to acknowledge climate change as a serious issue, they still have to face major disagreements about the source of the problem and the solution. While , only about 29% of Republicans ages 18-29 would phase out fossil fuels completely compared to 58% of Democrats in that age group, according to Pew Research Center. We believe that addressing climate change will require serious policy solutions that, for the foreseeable future, include some use of fossil fuels. But even if we aren’t all aligned on how to get to a low-carbon future, at least newer generations are pushing the rest of us to align on the right questions.
