What if flattening the curve literally came down to the clothes on your back?

“Had a telehealth appointment with a doctor today in which his image was rotated 90 degrees the whole time because he couldn’t figure out how to fix it.”The group behind one of world’s biggest consumer electronics expos is wrangling some of tech’s most powerful players, including Microsoft and Facebook, to advise public health agencies on tech upgrades that could help ward off future pandemics and other health crises.

What we’re finding is health care delivery has to interface with consumer technology. We need to be able to collect accurate data, and a lot of that is going to come from consumer devices so public health officials can make broad decisions. 1) Americans are wary about giving the dominant tech companies too much highly sensitive, personal health care information — should they be? How are you protecting their privacy and securing their data? Should there be restrictions on what companies can do with the health data collected from wearables?

3) How can we make sure that any tech developments addressing health and the virus will be broadly available to Americans — including communities of color that are disproportionately hard hit by the virus, and areas struggling with internet connectivity? It wasn’t the ironclad commitment some in telehealth were hoping for, but the Senate’s latest coronavirus rescue package calls for sustaining the pandemic-fueled boom in virtual care through the end of next year.
