Carla Gates, 56, met Eugene Gates at a church in Lancaster in 2010. He was friendly, strong in his faith and dedicated to ministry, she said. The two married in 2015 and joined Willow Grove Baptist Church in central Oak Cliff. Carla Gates sang in the choir and Eugene Gates worked the sound system. His funeral will be held there Saturday. She said he knew many residents on his mail route out of the Lakewood post office, which he’d been on for more than 15 years.

About 4:45 p.m., Carla Gates got a call from her husband’s office saying he had passed out and was rushed to a hospital. His manager later told her he collapsed in a yard on his route, and that the homeowner performed CPR on him.“He was healthy,” she said, crying. “He walked eight miles a day, he delivered to 400 homes a day.”It’s because of his long career in Texas that she believes he died from the heat.

Carla Gates described communication from the Postal Service about her husband’s benefits as “awful” and said the agency had not called her to offer condolences as of Tuesday.
