The winner will succeed Nancy O’Malley, who is stepping down after three terms

Four people want to become Alameda County’s top prosecutor, and with District Attorney Nancy O’Malley not running for the office she’s held since 2009, the June 7 race is wide open for them.

For Price, “administering justice fairly” is the most important task of the District Attorney’s Office. But that hasn’t been the case, and it’s why she is running again, she said.Like some other reform-minded district attorney candidates across the nation in recent years, Price doesn’t have a prosecutorial background. She started her legal career at the Bayview Hunters’ Point Community Defenders’ office in San Francisco.

Seth Steward, who is chief of staff for Oakland Councilmember Dan Kalb and previously worked as a prosecutor in San Francisco, wants to publish more data to increase the office’s transparency. Steward joined the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office as an assistant prosecutor in 2008 and tried more than 70 jury trials. He later joined the Air Force, serving as a flight engineer on a combat search and rescue helicopter for the California Air National Guard.

He says “we can’t incarcerate ourselves out of this problem,” however, and he wants to support the Oakland Ceasefire program that is run jointly by police and community leaders in an effort to prevent violence. The program gives people opportunities to leave gangs or other situations that expose them to violence by helping them get education, jobs and other kinds of assistance.
