A hammerhead worm, also known as a broadhead planarian, demonstrates toxicity with bold coloration. The worm favors warm and damp habitats.

But the worms are also present in California and Oregon, and since 2022 there have been reports of sightings in southern and central Maine, according to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. The species Bipalium adventitium was first detected in the New York area in 1947 by zoologist Libbie Hyman, who reported the finding in 1954 in the journal American Museum Novitates.

The scientists found the worms nearly everywhere they looked, even where hammerheads hadn't been reported before.
