Opinion: A reader wants to know why there seemed to be a double standard applied to candidates when it came to debates.There is a lot going on − all the time − and no one in my business can get to it all, so I hear - all the time - from readers telling me what ILike this guy, who lives in Congressional District 5 and said in an email, “You guys in the media were all over Hobbs for not debating Lake but nowhere did I see a word from you about Andy Biggs refusing to debate.
,” Lake said on CNN.She also said, “We have far too many issues facing our state right now to have a weak, cowardice candidate win, and then make it to the governor’s mansion.” Other Republicans chimed in. As did any number of TV commentators, political analysts, columnists and even fellow Democrats.Meantime, as the gentleman from CD 5 correctly pointed out,Democrat Javier Ramos and Independent Clint Smith on Arizona PBS, the same debate format Hobbs turned down.
Biggs office points out that Biggs did appear with his challengers before the Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce where, they say,"he wiped them out so there was no reason to debate them again". And added that the PBS debate occurred during a Congressional session day. And no one outside of the candidates questioned the fact that Queen Creek, bless it's heart, isn't exactly statewide television, which is available to all of CD 5's constuents and something a representative might want to attend.
