EP Scott Gimple on why TWDUniverse spinoffs only have six episodes each in season 1 👀 '[T]hat was more of an AMC thing. But to tell you the truth, it really is also a 2023 thing... It’s telling stories to be consumed in a very different way.' 😯

Scott Gimple, executive producer of The Walking Dead universe, explains the reason the upcoming spinoffs will be six episodes in length, reflecting the original show's first season. Following 2022's conclusion of the long-running show after its extended season 11, three spinoffs following some of the show's main characters are now slated to air this year and in 2024.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Speaking with Collider about the upcoming spinoffs, the first of which to air will be The Walking Dead: Dead City in June, Gimple is questioned on the relative shortness of season 1 for all these series. His response is there were a number of factors that led to the decision, but the prevailing one was that AMC were primarily the ones making it.

We can just be straight up about that, that was more of an AMC thing. But to tell you the truth, it really is also a 2023 thing, where it’s telling stories in a different cadence. It’s telling stories to be consumed in a very different way. I think it’s actually pushed us to tell stories in a very different way, which I think is a very good thing, after 12 years. I’m a dinosaur.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Walking Dead Gimple notes in his interview that the current climate and mode of consumption in television is very different to when the show first aired back in 2011, which has influenced the decision for the upcoming spinoffs to repeat The Walking Dead season 1's approach. Its first ever season was just six episodes and remains one of its most beloved and acclaimed.

It should also be noted that abbreviated first seasons is common practice for AMC. Many of its shows, including Fear the Walking Dead and even Breaking Bad, began with shorter season 1s before being renewed with consistently longer seasons, though the latter was set to initially be slightly longer before the Writers Guild of America strike. This may well be to gauge a show's reception first, so as not to risk too much investment in the case of disappointing figures.
