When a Trump donor in Chicago met with Emmer, he refused to say he'd endorse Trump. The donor refused to give him money. Team Emmer is aware that Trump loyalists’ attacks could be problem, and they spent the weekend trying to quell that sentiment.
Emmer has a lot of allies in the Freedom Caucus, and he was their go-to in leadership. But now that he’s running for speaker, there are policy differences that need to be addressed, a senior Republican aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the dynamic said. Because Emmer is the front-runner, his rivals for speaker are focusing on him. Some are pointing to his less than 10 months in House leadership as a vulnerability, too.
And four of them — Emmer, Bergman, Scott and Sessions — voted for more Ukraine aid last month, while the others voted against it.
