Why TikTok is taking months to delete personal US user data from servers outside its Project Texas firewalls, even as its political standing sours
150 million US users from the Chinese government, he acknowledged one of the shortfalls of TikTok's data-protection strategy.
As Congress lays the groundwork to ban or force a sale of TikTok, the company has frequently used its data-gating program Project Texas as its answer to national-security concerns. Through the effort, TikTok says it will route US user data into Oracle servers and assign oversight of that data to a separate American division called US Data Security, or USDS.
Chew's acknowledgment that not all US data is USDS-guarded weakened his case before Congress. And with TikTok's fate in the US largely in the hands of American and Chinese officials, the time it takes to complete technical tasks like deleting US user data from non-Oracle servers may be one of the few areas it does control.
"People usually think of deleting data as moving it to their recycle bin or their trash can on their desktop," said Cobun Zweifel-Keegan, DC managing director for the International Association of Privacy Professionals, an industry group."There are much more robust kinds of deletion and that's where industry standard requirements come in in terms of data security."
