The gondolas from the Great Wheel at Morey's Pier in Wildwood have been removed for renovations.
— is one of those year-round attractions for many to enjoy sweeping views, as well as a fun light show for holidays. But this offseason, the plug has been pulled for renovations.
“Each year we remove gondolas for ongoing maintenance and do all other required maintenance and paint parts to the ride,” Kyle Morey, of Morey’s Pier, said Thursday. “This year is not significantly different, with the exception of repainting the entire wheel. To do so effectively we removed all of the gondolas and lights and will be making any necessary pre-painting repairs on the ride.”
Morey added that the wheel will be painted the same color, and the same configuration of lights will be back on the ride by the spring.was manufactured by Vekoma International, a Dutch company, and transported by ship to the East Coast. Over time the wheel has become a landmark for travelers along the Garden State Parkway after 92,400 LED lights were added, creating a beaming attraction that beckons from across the bay.
At least one generation of vacationers knows the wheel intimately as the harbinger of respite as they cruise into vacation and wave goodbye to summer memories. Each year rides at Morey’s Pier are inspected and scheduled for routine maintenance, Morey said. The gondolas have already been pulled down from the Great Wheel this fall, and the lights that have displayed spooky creatures during Halloween and snowflakes and other famous Christmas characters during the holidays are in the process of being taken down as well.
