With the referendum struggling, questions have been raised about why some Greens MPs are nowhere to be seen.

A number of NSW Greens MPs have yet to speak publicly on the Voice, a month out from the referendum.

Analysis of social media shows public support for the government’s proposal to enshrine a Voice to parliament in the nation’s constitution has been virtually non-existent from some Greens MPs.Credit:A month out from the referendum and despite polling suggesting nearly 70 per cent of Greens voters will vote in favour of the referendum, Newtown MP Jenny Leong, and upper house members Abigail Boyd, Sue Higginson, and Amanda Cohn were yet to publicly promote the Yes campaign by Friday.

The Greens’ contorted position was exacerbated after Victorian senator Lidia Thorpe quit to join the crossbench, saying she wanted to speak freely on all issues from a “sovereign perspective”.Since then, with the Yes vote tanking, some NSW Greens MPs have been missing in action. Of the party’s nine members of parliament, seven have posted on social media about the Yes campaign three times or less.

NSW Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi has been one of several Greens MPs who haven’t been actively campaigning on behalf of the Yes campaign. As she outlined her position in favour of the Yes vote, Faruqi questioned whether the proposed Voice to parliament would just be another body “ignored by the government and paid lip service to”.

“NSW Greens MPs have been campaigning to support the Yes23 campaign, with events planned here in NSW Parliament and across the state.”

Queensland government to actively support Yes campaignQueensland government to actively support Yes campaignThe Queensland government will actively support the Yes campaign for the Voice despite fears over backlash in the regions. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she and every member of her caucus will campaign alongside Yes supporters ahead of the October 14 referendum. Queensland is a state where the vote is on track to fail according to Labor’s polling; and is especially prevalent in the regions. This is causing concern for some Labor MPs from the regions who fear that the party’s support for the Yes campaign will damage its brand ahead of next year’s state election. This concern however is not shared by the state’s premier.
