Why does the moon landing hoax endure: 'A bunch of people believing nonsense'
What’s the conspiracy theory you secretly believe? Or, at least, think is somewhat, somehow, in a strictly theoretical way, kind of compelling? It’s likely not that Elvis is still alive or that the Earth is flat or that subterranean lizard people control the government.
But as one of the first major events that the vast majority of people experienced through television, where people were transfixed daily by made-up stories on fake sets, the moon landing was tailor-made to convince susceptible viewers, says Oliver Morton, an editor at The Economist and author of The Moon: A History for the Future. It’s an odd conspiracy theory, he says, since it doesn’t have “a very clear account of the bad guys.
The future belongs to the civilization that can master science and technology ... this is what the space race was about “The point of Apollo to a large extent was to show the world that America could do the impossible and in an odd way the conspiracy theory is sort of like a dark mirror of that because it claims that America showed the world that it could make people believe the impossible rather than they could do it,” says Morton. “Those are allied concepts.”
There are also attempts — some of which can be attributed back to Kaysing — to prove that the evidence documenting the moon landings were themselves hoaxes. Everyone has heard the argument that the U.S. flag appeared to be fluttering but how could it on the moon, where there’s no wind? In fact, the U.S. flag did move, but only as it settled. It then remained rippled from being in storage.
