Why tax refunds aren't really a good thing:
people received tax refunds this year. In the interim, because the government is taking in less money from the ultra-affluent and companies, there's less money for infrastructure and other programs while economic growth remains paltry.
Then there's the unsatisfying process of estimating how much to set aside for Uncle Sam. If you over-estimate, even though you're getting money back, you didn't help your cause: You're simply getting money back that you didn't owe in the first place. Most guess how much tax they owe based on what they made last year. If you didn't have any extra deductions that you could write off, and your family situation remained the same, you probably guessed right.
Then there's the inequity of tax policy in this country. Only a few people profit from the way the tax code is written. If you're a corporation, own lots of real estate, inherited wealth or even own a decent stock portfolio, you can do very well and may not payEarning wages? You get whacked with Social Security, Medicare, unemployment and state taxes.
