After a sizzling February, Spurs rookie Malaki Branham has March off to a good start as well
San Antonio Spurs guard Malaki Branham shoots as Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green defends during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Sunday, March 5, 2023, in Houston.Malaki Branham is 50 games into his NBA career, and he can feel each of them in every step he takes.Branham has heard tell of the dreaded “rookie wall,” that nebulous barrier that often sets in as a first-year NBA player begins to log more games and more minutes than he has played in his life.
He was one of the NBA’s top rookies during the month of February, leading all first-year players in total points and scoring average .“He got into a really good groove there, where he was scoring 20 a night it seemed like,” point guard Tre Jones said. “And very easily, too. It looks super effortless.”
For his efforts, Branham was nominated for Western Conference Rookie of the Month honors, an award that ultimately went to Utah’s Walker Kessler. With Jones on the injured list for much of February due to a left foot injury, Branham has started in 11 consecutive appearances.
