JOHOR BARU: Those who criticised the Johor Mentri Besar over a pair of expensive shoes he has been seen wearing have been given the royal boot.
Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim has put his foot down and told Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi to ignore the chatter and focus instead on carrying out his duties.Tunku Ismail’s comment came after netizens spotted the Mentri Besar wearing a pair of shoes said to cost around RM40,000.
The picture of Onn Hafiz’s shoes first appeared on vernacular news portals, and has since gained traction after netizens started commenting on it. In response, Tunku Ismail sarcastically chimed in by saying Onn Hafiz should “just wear slippers instead”. “I was just thinking of gifting you and some of the government officers watches. Even this kind of thing can become an issue,” he said in a tweet yesterday.
On Monday, a person tweeted a picture of the shoes and poked fun at Onn Hafiz for being able to afford expensive shoes within three months of being appointed as Mentri Besar. In a Facebook post on Monday, he said Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar had given such gifts to members of the state executive council and civil servants before to motivate them to do better.
