For months, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have protested across the country against plans they worry will undermine the country's liberal democracy. If a compromise isn't reached, protesters fear it could lead to a civil war or constitutional crisis.
By Dov Lieber| Photographs by Kobi Wolf for The Wall Street JournalFor three months, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have protested weekly across the country against plans by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to overhaul the country’s judicial system.
Mr. Netanyahu’s coalition has already presented legislation or plans that protesters say could harm the rights of women, LGBT people and Israel’s Arab minority and also entrench Israeli rule over millions of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Limor Vilcovsky, a 53-year-old interior designer from Tel Aviv, said she wonders if her 11-year-old will do mandatory army service: “If there’s a police coup here, I don’t know if I can send this boy to army service. I can’t believe this is coming out of my mouth.”“I’m afraid this will no longer be a liberal democracy. I’m afraid the balance between a Jewish and democratic state will be broken,” she said.
