The picture can’t be much clearer. The Guardians know pitching. Hitting? Not so much.
They have not drafted a can’t-miss-hitter since Francisco Lindor in 2011. High-round picks Bradley Zimmer, Clint Frazier, Will Benson and Carson Tucker have been non-factors or have been traded. Last year’s No. 1 pick, college outfielder Chase DeLauter, is coming off foot surgery and just started playing at Class A Lake County.
“I think the number of reps, especially as young hitters get to the higher levels, is really important.”“Jose’s first couple years in the big leagues, he wasn’t the same guy that he is today,” said Cerfolio. “It took him 500 to 1,000 plate appearances to make that level adjustment. You can try to simulate as much of that as we can in the minor leagues, but the gap between Triple-A and the big leagues is the toughest jump in the entire sport.
“On the position player side, is a reactive task. You can only face what you’re tasked to face from a velocity and stuff standpoint in the minor leagues vs. the big leagues. I don’t know if that’s a proven science, but I think that’s one of the initial challenges that comes from young hitters making that adjustment for the first time to the big league level.”
But after just 73 at-bats this season, he was optioned to Triple-A after hitting .192 with 15 strikeouts and two walks.
