There’s a secret between a black woman’s hands and the texture of her hair. I only knew bits and pieces of the secret: I could grasp the soft whispers my hair told me and had the patience to learn the commandments of my. My hair is a thick, coily, voluminous nest atop my head: sometimes a fro, other times a puff, most days a mass of energy and resistance. Wash days, twisting, and mixing my own hair potions, was the extent of my hair relationship.

So, that night, I sat in the living room until the early hours of the night and conducted a DIY experiment on my head: how to braid with extensions. I sat in front of a mirror, fumbled with my comb, smeared shea butter onto my strands and started splitting awkward parts into my scalp. Then I grabbed some hair and added it to my own, first wrapping it around the root and firmly braiding it down. One braid down, a couple dozen more to go. It wasn’t so bad.

Doing extensions is no easy task. It takes patience, trust, creativity, and imagination. It takes twice as many of these qualities when you're putting extensions in your own head. It can be a struggle to do it yourself when you can't see the back of your head. For instance, I don't know if my parts are straight, and I'm still learning how to braid as firmly and neatly on my own head as I can on a friend’s.

I also don't want to discredit professional hairstylists, because I know their work is a real art form that takes time and energy to complete. But for now, if I need simple twists of jumbo box braids, I can do it myself — with some inspiration, of course. I've found great hair ideas from Instagram and tutorials on YouTube, from
