Q: I believe my loquat tree has fire blight. It has large black and red areas on the limbs that look charred and red patches on the trunk and limbs. There are many brown leaves, and it had no fruit this season. Is it treatable? How should I approach the problem to save the tree?There are a few things going on here. It is not surprising that it did not produce fruit; the December freeze kept that from happening.

Fire blight is caused by the bacterium, Erwinia amylovora. Leaves turn brown with black blotches, curl, then shrivel, yet remain attached. Die-off starts on the uppermost twigs, turning black and curling like a shepherd’s crook. Branches develop dark, sunken cankers that enlarge and girdle branches, eventually killing the branch. The pathogen spreads by rain and insects.
