He has strong ties with storied constituencies such as the NAACP. But Johnson has spent his tenure as mayor championing causes more commonly associated with conservatives.

Johnson is no fan of the “defund the police” movement, popular among many of his progressive peers. Instead, he’s supported smarter policing, and under his leadership, the city has made substantial progress. Whether that recent policy battle lost is what ultimately drove Johnson to cross the political Rubicon, only he can say.
