OPINION: Boards are showing more restraint when it comes to chief executive salaries. But is that about to change?
ACSI notes that the average realised pay for chief executives of companies with headquarters outside Australia was $11.1 million, compared with $4.2 million for the 159 bosses of Australian company CEOs. This may suggest that the focus on pay from proxy advisers, institutional investors and media is not as strong in markets like the US as it is Down Under.
As equity markets retreated in 2022, it wasn’t unexpected to see bonus payments fall from their post-COVID peak. Median awarded bonus payments have shrunk by 0.5 per cent per annum over the past five years, which can be taken as another sign of restraint. The aggregate figures are fACSI, but it is harder to answer the question that matters most for investors in individual companies: are they getting good value for the money they pay CEOs?
