EXCLUSIVE: Bones & All star Taylor Russell explains the ending of the film. “I think it's very beautiful. Very heartfelt.”
Star Taylor Russell explains Bones and All's ending, including why she thinks the film's surprisingly violent conclusion is actually quite romantic. Released in theaters on November 18, Bones and All is the latest film directed by Luca Gudagnino, whose recent works include Call Me by Your Name and the Suspiria remake. A fusion of horror and romance, Bones and All follows two cannibalistic lovers Lee and Maren Yearly who embark on a perilous road trip across 1980s America.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Russell talked all about the buzzy new cannibalistic love story. The Bones and All star especially shared her thoughts on the film's violent and shocking ending, explaining why it is actually "incredibly romantic" and "very beautiful." Read Russell's explanation of Bones and All's ending below:
The ending is incredibly romantic to me because it's a gift that he gives her, knowing the framework of these two people, this affliction that they have. It's the most loving act in a way. And it always felt like that when we talked about it, so I think it's very beautiful. Very heartfelt. In their world it's the most romantic version.
Just when Maren and Lee begin to put their checkered pasts behind them and settle down together, the strange man Sully reemerges with a bone to pick with Maren for leaving him years ago. Just as Sully barges into their apartment and begins threatening Maren, Lee arrives home and heroically saves her, but in the process, is fatally stabbed in the chest. With his dying breath, Lee asks Maren to eat him.
For the two cannibalistic lovers, Bones and All's surprise ending is the perfect conclusion to their story. As Russell explains, Lee permitting Maren to dine on his corpse, which is naturally shocking to general audiences, is the ultimate romantic gesture for the two cannibals. In the film, eaters have the urge to eat whomever they are most attracted to, and with Lee and Maren madly in love, he is an incredibly satisfying meal for her that allows the couple to become one with each other.
