The Snowman is now streaming on Netflix, but it has a very low Rotten Tomatoes score. We break down why that is & why the film's a missed opportunity.
Six years after its release, The Snowman is finally streaming on Netflix, but it’s still one of the worst-reviewed movies of the last ten years. Starring Michael Fassbender, J.K. Simmons, Rebecca Ferguson, and Val Kilmer, The Snowman is an adaptation of the 2007 novel of the same name by Jo Nesbø. After debuting on Netflix, the psychological thriller was catapulted to the number one spot on the streamer’s Top 10 movies.
Directed by Tomas Alfredson from a screenplay by Peter Straughan, Hossein Amini, and Søren Sveistrup, The Snowman follows Detective Harry Hole as he investigates the murders of women, with a snowman being left behind at each crime scene. The Snowman has a low review score on Rotten Tomatoes, a stunning 6% based on 201 reviews. The film’s audience score isn’t much higher, currently at 18% with over 10,000 ratings. The Snowman ultimately grossed only $43.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Snowman Is An Incoherent Mess The Snowman was considered by many critics to be inept and dull, with the story making little sense. What should have been a thrilling crime drama turned into an incoherent, exhausting, and sluggish film that struggles to connect its story threads. Some reviews called The Snowman a pale imitation of other, better crime thrillers, including The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
According to Alfredson, 10-15% of the script was never filmed, the shoot in Norway was too fast, and that there was little prep time ahead of shooting, all of which made the editing process more difficult. What was perhaps expected to be a good, enjoyable adaptation ultimately fell apart rather quickly, turning The Snowman into one of the most derided and disappointing films of the last decade.
The Snowman Was A Major Missed Opportunity The Snowman, as with other books featuring Harry Hole, was a bestseller. The novel was praised for being intense, a suspenseful procedural that keeps readers at the edge of their seats. With such lush source material, The Snowman movie is even more of a missed opportunity, squandering its potential. The film being aimless and incoherent also failed its talented cast, who had little to work with when bringing the story to life.
