Clever of Apple TV+ to release this sun-soaked pro surfing series in the doldrums of February.
We are awash in sports documentaries. On any given night, instead of watching actual sports, you could watch a series on professional tennis, golf, football, soccer, F1, cricket, MotoGP—and my new favorite, surfing . These are not deep dives into the past, like the brilliantly escapist NBA docseries. These are about current teams and current pros—recent wins and losses—and carry some news value, but also a good bit of disposability.
The whole thing can feel like a money grab—niche sports leagues kindle interest and create new fans; streamers cash in on sports without paying for live broadcast rights. There’s not a lot of hard-hitting journalism happening. Rather, these series tend to conjure Hollywood-esque rivalry narratives to keep you hooked. But the pacesetter here is the genuinely terrific Netflix Formula 1 series, about to debut its fifth season, which is rightly credited with a surge of interest in the sport.
The series quietly debuted last year and seduced me with its dreamy locales, kinetic personalities, and crisp production.
