Start-up figures including from Culture Amp and Heaps Normal made first-time political donations this year, backing a movement that has reshaped federal politics.
Doug English and Christy Dowling decided something had to give. It was the months after the Coalition’s shock 2019 election win, and progress on climate change policy in Canberra was stalled.and his wife read a newspaper story about the fledgling Climate 200 group and businessman Simon Holmes à Court’s plans. They decided to join a series of Australian start-up founders making their first ever political donations.
“I think part of this is advocacy,” Ms Dowling said. “We’re happy to be upfront about putting our energy and our money behind climate issues.” “Tech and start-ups are often about finding solutions to problems through innovation, hard work, luck, good timing and often outside investment. Heaps Normal co-founder Andy Miller saw the opportunity “to band together with other small businesses and have an impact on climate policy.”
