Some suggest the fiery inverted “99” is a reference to both the past and the future of the series. This is because at the end of Back to the Future Part I, after Marty goes back to 1985, Doc dances in the street. One of the nearby shops is Western Auto, the sign of which is a giant neon nine made out of an arrow.
