AHS could've changed Robbie's career.
Margot Robbie was nearly cast in American Horror Story: Asylum, and based on where the actress was with her career at the time, there's a specific season 2 character she likely auditioned for. Asylum served as the follow-up installment to the horror anthology's well-received debut, Murder House. Rather than a present-day tale, Asylum was primarily set in the 1960s, following Briarcliff Manor and the various staff and patients within the mental institution.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT According to casting director Eric Dawson, Margot Robbie auditioned for a role in American Horror Story season 2. Though she didn't get the part, she left a lasting impression, leaving the team hoping to use her in the near future. Granted, she quickly rose to stardom, meaning Robbie "was out of our realm of possibility of hiring," according to Dawson.
Margot Robbie Likely Auditioned To Play Grace In American Horror Story: Asylum Based on American Horror Story: Asylum's character list, the most likely figure Margot Robbie auditioned for was Grace Bertrand. The character, played by Lizzie Brocheré, was a young woman sent to Briarcliff after murdering her abusive father and stepmother with an axe. While there, she befriended Kit Walker and helped fuel his motivation to escape the institution before giving birth to his son.
Robbie and Brocheré are only a few years apart in age, but seeing as American Horror Story went with a relatively unknown actress, it would make sense that Robbie auditioned for Grace. Leading up to the 2012 role, Robbie was coming off of a stint in ABC's Pan Am, but before that, she was mostly working in Australian TV shows.
In fact, Margot Robbie's career trajectory in becoming one of Hollywood's biggest stars may not have happened had she been cast in American Horror Story: Asylum. It's possible that she would have focused more on TV roles rather than audition for movies. That could have prevented Margot Robbie's major movie roles like Suicide Squad, I, Tonya, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Bombshell, Babylon, and even Barbie.
