The World Health Organization advised Ukraine to destroy any high-threat pathogens that could result in an outbreak among the population.
At issue are dozens of public health facilities and biological laboratories the former Soviet Union used for their illegal biological weapons program. The Department of Defense’s Biological Threat Reductions Program has worked with Ukrainian partners to improve its biological safety procedures since 2005. The United States has invested roughly $200 million in supporting 46 laboratories, DOD said in a fact sheet.
These Ukrainian laboratories have gained outsize significance in recent days amid a Russian disinformation campaign that the U.S. is working with Ukraine to develop biological weapons. The Department of Defense said in the fact sheet that the Ukrainian Ministry of Health responsibility ordered the secure disposal of samples, actions that would “limit the danger of an accidental release of pathogens should Russia’s military attack laboratories, a real concern since they have attacked Ukraine’s nuclear power plants and research facilities.”
