Biting into a Mickey-shaped beignet is an essential part of the park experience.
It didn’t matter the day or the hour — the Mint Julep Bar in New Orleans Square atalways had a long line. There were always, always dozens of people queued up to get a bag of hot beignets and, depending on your proclivity for sweet or bitter, a nonalcoholic mint julep or a hot cup of coffee to wash them down.
And really, who can blame people for waiting? Biting into a fresh beignet — and subsequently showering yourself in powdered sugar, no matter how hard you try to avoid it — is an essential park experience. For sweet-toothed Disneyland fans, beignets are as much of a must-eat as Mickey pretzels and turkey legs.
But the Mint Julep Bar is closed for most of this year, part of the renovation that will turn the French Market Restaurant into Tiana’s Palace. The restaurant, themed after “The Princess and the Frog,” is set to open later this year, ahead ofin 2024. The current ride is scheduled to close permanently May 31 and reopen next year after a makeover to focus on Disney’s first Black princess.

Beignets are available at Royal Street Veranda, another quick service window in New Orleans Square. Normally, that restaurant serves only soup in bread bowls and isn’t one of Disneyland’s busier food spots.
In all my years of ordering beignets, I’ve had mixed results. Sometimes, they’re not so fresh. But sometimes, they're so hot and sweet, and biting into them is such a transcendent experience, that I wonder why I don’t order them all the time. I’ve had truly incredible beignets at Disneyland, especially the seasonal flavors: I have loved the chocolate-covered strawberry iteration, and especially the Halloween pumpkin spice-dusted beignets, that the park has offered in the past.
