Schmidt guided Ireland to number 1 in the World Rugby rankings for the first time ever when they beat Wales back-to-back in the 2019 World Cup warm-up matches. Schmidt was named World Ruby's director of rugby and high performance in October 2020, which was a newly created position to overlook player welfare, training and education. He resigned a year later in order to spend more time with his family in New Zealand.
Schmidt's country will face his former team Ireland this weekend for what is set to be a nail-biting World Cup quarter-final.
