When my spouse got the job of a lifetime, my world crashed. Here's how I moved on and forged my own path
When her husband was appointed US Ambassador to Spain under President Obama, she left her career in philanthropy, her friends and family, and a life she loved to join her husband for a three-and-a-half-year tour overseas.
Throughout my life, work had always defined who I was. I had worked for over 30 years in the nonprofit world, fundraising for organizations I admired , and helping corporations and foundations make strategic philanthropic decisions. I was also deeply engaged in my role on the boards of many civic organizations in the Boston area, where I live.
It wasn't easy. The staff at the US Embassy in Madrid was busy. They all had job descriptions and important work to do. There wasn't a lot of spare time to figure out how to fit someone in to their ongoing work. What lessons did I learn as I forged this new path for myself? And how are they transferable to anyone seeking new paths?was such a bad micromanager that all my employees quit — and it taught me the one trait all powerful leaders needFirst, I discovered the importance of drawing on personal characteristics as much as professional expertise. Patience, persistence, resilience, openness, kindness … these are the traits that will help buoy efforts and sustain you throughout them.
