Throughout the Bible, we see God calling some of the most unlikely people to serve as ambassadors for His Kingdom. And because God is the same yesterday, today and forever, He still does that in this generation, regardless of age, creed, nationality or circumstance.
Born from humble beginnings, Fr Raymond Raj began life as a Hindu and was only baptised at the age of seven. Even so, going to church every Sunday was not a normal routine as it was costly to travel back and forth by public transport considering the family did not own a car. This also meant that he never attended Catechism classes.
Now, this is where his story gets interesting. Bear in mind that in a typical Asian- Indian family, feelings and emotions take a back seat as opposed to doing what is expected of a child, and to top it off, Fr Raymond was a military man. Therefore, by nature and due to his military nurture, he was a regimented man who used to find it difficult to express himself. He was more comfortable with rules and regulations.
Since he had been away from his home parish for more than 10 years and was never an active member of the church, he was advised to attend daily Mass and join a ministry or two in his home parish so that he would get a sense of what a life centred around Christ, the Church and its responsibilities would be like. He obeyed and did this diligently for an entire year while journeying closely with his parish priest, Fr Martin Arlando.
