As a result of poisoned sugar bait traps, some female cockroaches have lost their sweet tooth. Now, research shows a few crafty male roaches have evolved a workaround.
Male cockroaches try to woo females with sugary treats. But a preponderance of poisoned bait traps has thrown an evolutionary wrench into this classic courting strategy, making some cockroaches lose their sweet tooth. Now, scientists behind a study published today in thereport that some crafty male roaches appear to have cooked up a new confectionary technique to get around females’ sugar aversion, helping them find more mates.
To attract females, male German cockroaches typically secrete a sweet goo on their backs. As the female settles in to eat this “nuptial gift,” the male bends his abdomen into a mating position and hooks on to the female to transfer his sperm . “The sugary attraction is critical to their mating system,” Ashbrook says.
While studying the phenomenon, the researchers also realized female cockroaches that avoided the sugary bait also sometimes refused to mate. Male cockroaches’ gooey “gift” to females contains a sugar called maltose, which quickly breaks down into glucose when it comes in contact with saliva in the female’s mouth.
