When people experience adversity or trauma, many turn to friends and family rather than seeking professional help. New research suggests which may be the better approach.

This is particularly true when someone has a variety of options. In an urban environment, despite ready access to emergency services, there is also more access to informal services and situational options for “armchair” such as bars, salons, and fitness studios where we have a solid relationship with trusted service providers. But in less densely populated areas, informal support systems may play an even greater role.Sometimes oversharing depends on where you live. Matthew Hagler et al. studied this phenomenon in a piece called “‘We Almost Had the Whole Block’s Phone Number on the Wall’” .
Examining a sample of rural‐dwelling subjects comprised of both adolescents and adults, Hagler et al. found that most of them reported having at least one informal helper present, while less than 10% reported receiving professional help. They also found that different types of helpers were more likely used with different types of adversities.
