“Sparky” may soon feature on kindy kids’ career wish lists alongside princesses and astronauts if union and industry plans to inspire a new generation of future tradies take off.
Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy told parliamentary question time on Monday that AUKUS would create 20,000 jobs, including 8500 building and maintaining Australia’s new fleet of submarines, with apprentice training to begin in Adelaide soon.
O’Connor said the government was open to looking at any plan that encouraged girls and women to enter male-dominated trades and professions. “School kids know how to get a job in mining, but they don’t know how to get a job in renewable energy. The pathways aren’t really laid out for them in the same way,” he said, adding apprentice wages did not help entice people deciding whether to join a trade in their late teens.
The electrical union and Master Electricians Australia are also pushing for the energy industry to be able to sponsor foreign, skilled workers to come to Australia, with a smoother pathway for them to migrate permanently.
