A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Thursday, Oct. 27, carrying 53 Starlink satellites into orbit and providing a stunning light show for anyone who looked toward the sky. The launch went off at 6:14 p.m. and the glowing, gracefully arcing rocket was seen widely in the Los Angeles area, and the bright orange rocket flames during takeoff reportedly could be seen at least 100 miles away, from the San Fernando Valley to Arizona and Sonora, Mexico.
The launch used the company’s Falcon 9 rocket. The first-stage booster was used before, to launch the Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, Double Asteroid Redirection Test and five other Starlink missions, according to SpaceX. After separation the Falcon 9’s first stage will return to Earth and land on the ‘Of Course I Still Love You’ drone ship, which is waiting in the Pacific Ocean.
