A lawsuit alleging priests abused boys at Jesuit College Preparatory School Dallas in the late 1970s and early 1980sNine Dallas-area men brought the lawsuit in 2019 against the school, the Society of Jesuits which is a Catholic religious order and the Catholic Diocese of Dallas. The school’s president, Mike Earsing, said he believes the accounts told by the men who brought the suit. In a letter to school community members Earsing said he met with the men and believes they are not vengeful. He wants to ensure the same abuse never happens again.The leader of the Society of Jesuits, the Rev. Thomas Greene, will come from the headquarters in St. Louis to host a retreat in Dallas aimed at healing with the plaintiffs.
The school, the diocese and the Jesuits society will continue working to prevent future abuse by taking steps such as training for staff. They’ve also committed to investigating accusations of abuse and reporting them to law enforcement to conduct their own investigations. As a result of a national abuse scandal, many Catholic churches and religious orders have been faced with lawsuits since 2002. In an effort to restore public trust, many churches and orders have published names of priests they determined were credibly accused.
