The Magheralin machine is Ireland's first male finallist ever in the Games - and is on course to strike gold
Daniel Wiffen is right where he wants to be as Ireland's first male Olympic finalist on Tuesday night.
He puts his percentage of effort at 95 and hopes that committing 100% to the final will get him an Olympic and World record as he attempts to win a sixth championship final in a row. But as a double World champion this year - in the 800m and also the 1500m, which he will get to later this week - Wiffen has a big target on his back.
"I wasn't going in there with 100% effort trying to make the final - I’m there to get the job done and hopefully finish it in the final. Wiffen also reeled in another Aussie, the 400m silver medallist Elijah Whittington, who pushed himself into the early lead. The Armagh man beat Whittington to gold in the Worlds six months ago.
“I was more nervous than I was before the World Championships, but that’s just the Olympics, a different kind of level. But I dealt with it quite well. A bit nervous around the first 100m, but then I settled in."
