Sligo hopeful Dean Clancy kicks off Ireland's challenge in the ring at the Games

This has been a long time coming for Dean Clancy, Ireland's first boxer in the ring in Paris. And that's not just because he qualified for the Olympics over a year ago at the European Games, where he won bronze.

"Seeing them come home was special, big time," said Clancy. "2021 was the perfect time for me to start thinking about Paris. So. this is it, 100% this is what I have targeted. I'm 22, so I am young. But I'm bringing a lot of experience into this." If he progresses, he will face the 2016 Olympic silver medallist Sofiane Oumiha, one of the local favourites, in the last 16.

"My approach is to take the draw as it comes. To be the best you have to beat them all to get to the top of the podium, so I'll be happy with how it comes. I don't have any preferences with who I want to box. Getting home to Sligo after a final pre-Olympics camp in Germany was also a massive boost before setting off for Paris. "It was great, the support in town has been amazing, and also out in Manorhamilton, at my boxing club," Clancy remarked.
