As ShineText founders marahml + Naomi_NYC point out, mental health stigma seems to be fading as we collectively deal with an event that's worsened mental health across the board. MentalHealthAwarenessMonth
Then it was about learning. We did a survey to learn, a month and a half to two months into social distancing, what does that look like for your mental health? We heard absolutely [the respondents’] mental health was declining. It has worsened since pandemic. The top reason was uncertainty about the future. The number one word that described how people were feeling was “anxious.”
What we also saw is, because we are talking about [mental health] more as a culture, this topic that has been one of the most stigmatized is all of a sudden starting to be destigmatized. Fifty-two percent of people said they were talking about their mental health more with others because they know people are struggling. Because people were talking about mental health, people … felt less stigmatized and were practicing more compassion.
TV: What do you think will happen as far as stigma once the pandemic ends? Do you think we’ve really made a lasting change to how we talk about mental health, or do you envision some sort of backslide where the mental health stigma returns?I hope it's not the latter of the backslide! There is a positive snowball effect that will happen as a result of this reduction in stigma.
TV: A lot of people are saying the coping mechanisms they’ve used for their mental health in the past just aren’t working right now. Have you found your own coping mechanisms have had to change? There’s been a lot of change. One of the single most important things I try to tell myself [right now] is that I’ve had to redefine what productivity looks like. It's still about the quality of how I spend my time, but the way that might look day to day [is different].
