These are responses I often receive to the age-old conversation starter “What do you do for work?”.I do not believe the word ‘noble’ describes my profession as a special needs teacher. This job is no walk in the park, but neither are any other professions. Being a special needs teacher comes with its set of workload and job hazards, but joy is all I feel when I look back on my past 11 years in this field.
This added pressure not only stresses the student, but forces them to work on areas their body, developmentally, may not be ready for. A vibrant 19-year-old student with autism I have been teaching for the last three years, has been learning to type on the computer as writing was a challenging skill for her.
As people, we are often accompanied by our set of expectations and mindset. As educators, we are taught to set that aside and come in with an open mind to meet our students where they are at. When teaching a student with learning and intellectual disabilities, there is a fine line between what they are able to learn and what is a challenge for them developmentally.
